How the Radio 1 Breakfast Show is produced.

What are the different responsibilities of presenters and producers?
Producers chat to the guests beforehand to run through what they are going to be talking about on the show e.g. don't swear, don't mention certain brands.
Fiona has to make sure equipment is working, brief the guests etc.
Producers have to watch each other and check that everything is running smoothly.
If an assistant producer has a certain skill relating to a show then that assistant producer might get asked to help produce that show.
There is a music tea who playlist the days music from 4am-7pm they program all the music so they are not listening to the same all the time.
Producers have to book in guests

What preparation goes into each programme?
Have to get up early-4am alarm, have to look through what's happened in the day e.g. on social media. Build structure, breaking the show into 10 minute chunks.
Put script together by... planning the guest/celebrities- it depends what's happening on the show how you put the script together.
The producers have to ensure they ask the best questions whenever there is a big celebrity to make sure they are making the most of the time.
Ensure what you are writing in the show is informative and suitable for their audience.

The presenters can ask for certain guests to come on the show or if some celebrities are in town you can contact them or book them ahead.

Whats most challenging and most enjoyable about working on the show
Challenging- difficult guests don't stay on the show long, e.g. they answer yes/no- they can find out from the listeners.
If guest go off about something and rant about something they have to be reminded they are on the radio, the interview might have to be terminated in extreme cases.
Enjoyable- if

What are the team dynamics about?

The team all get on and understand what each person needs in that small space.
Will and Fiona discuss what's appearing on the show.
Presenter has a good relationship with producers, the presenters learn new skills from new producers.
if there's a good vibe in the studio, you can feel that on the radio and it feels inclusive to the listeners.
The team treat it like a job then they build a good relationship and work well as a team.
Trust is important in the team because it means you can fully agree with peoples decisions.
Production meetings consist of group WhatsApp groups-they are always sharing information as to what is happening in the world.

How can you break into radio?

To get involved with radio, learn more about the radio, gain experience in radio, student radio at university (very important), directly approach people in the industry, keep persisting over rejection, 'don't give up'. Get as much experience as you can, figure out what it is that you like about other presenters (listen to other presenters), find out what you like talking about e.g. music as it will make you more confident as a radio presenter.
