Music Video Exam Question

Explain how representation in music videos are chosen to promote the artist(s). Refer to one of the music videos you have studies to support your answer.

In the music video ‘Stop Where You Are’, the artist Corinne Bailey Rae is presented as the star image, through the use of representation. In order to promote herself and her beliefs, she uses this video to create an indication of gratitude and celebration of life.

As a result of her red, flowing dress, it secludes her from the monochrome setting around her; she is perceived to be an important figure and stand out from the crowd. This is to ensure that her intention of conveying an important message is achieved; if she’s in focus the audience would be more likely to listen to her voice and lyrics. To support her meaning behind the video, at the beginning the bright light is dispersing in the background behind Corinne Bailey Rae; creating emphasis on the positive attitude she wants to give us.

The artist herself is depicted as being of a higher class and of a higher status than the other actors, further reinforcing her importance. Our eyes are automatically captivated towards her beauty and different style, where as an audience, we feel more inclined to keep looking at her. This is to make us want to listen to her message she is trying to convey.

Moreover, stereotypical representation of teenagers is shown throughout the music video. The large framing of the girl concealing herself in her hoodie is shown, where she appears to be cast aside and isolated, evoking a notion of vulnerability and loss; she is void of identity. The artist uses this representation to reinforce how many teenagers may feel and how life can seem useless and difficult at times. Her intention is to promote the idea that we shouldn’t let that act as a barrier, but instead ‘stopping and ritualising the moment’ will allow us to celebrate what with have right now.

In addition to this, class is a key motif seen in Corinne Bailey Rae’s music video. The contrast between the homeless woman and the business man is a clear divide, before unifying soon after in the video when the two appear in a two shot together. The short depth of focus draws our attention to the woman and highlights her significance; it is the artist’s way of promoting equality, and further promoting herself as a considerate and attentive person.
